Dr. Alan Cabello - Innovator, entrepreneur & strategic advisor

Alan Cabello is a seasoned innovator, entrepreneur, and educator with 15+ years of experience in corporate transformation. He co-founded Spark Works and Sparkademy, built innovation programs at ETH Zurich, and led ventures at Swiss Re and Allianz.

With deep expertise in innovation strategy, capability building, and digital transformation, Alan supports Bluemorrow in strengthening its impact model by bringing a unique perspective at the intersection of startups, corporates, and academia.

You’ve worked across startups and corporates. What’s the key to successful innovation in large organizations today?

Alan: The key is creating structured spaces for experimentation while aligning with strategic goals. Large organizations must learn to collaborate with startups, empower cross-functional teams, and adopt a portfolio approach to innovation. Cultural alignment, leadership buy-in, and the ability to scale validated ideas across silos are critical. It's something I’ve seen firsthand across multiple companies as an innovation manager, consultant or in academic-industry collaborations at ETH Zurich.


How do you see the role of foresight evolving in a world shaped by AI and rapid change?

Alan: Foresight is shifting from long-range prediction to dynamic sense-making. In an AI-driven world, it must combine data-driven insights with human judgment to detect weak signals, test plausible futures, and guide strategic agility. It’s no longer about getting the future “right,” but preparing organizations to adapt confidently and ethically, something we’ve embedded in executive programmes and innovation labs we’ve led through the years.

Dr. Christoph Nabholz - Foresight, risk & sustainability strategist

Christoph Nabholz was Chief Research & Sustainability Officer at Swiss Re and led the renown Swiss Re Institute. In that capacity, he led global foresight, risk intelligence, and sustainability strategies. With 30+ years of experience, from molecular genetics at Harvard to corporate risk innovation, he helps organizations anticipate emerging risks and drive long-term resilience.

Christoph: Stop treating sustainability as a side topic. The best strategy is to embed it in corporate strategy from the start, not just because it's expected, but because it creates long-term resilience and value.”

How do you balance digital transformation with maintaining strong human connection?

Heike: It’s not one or the other. Implementing robotics and digital tools, but make sure customer collaboration is co‑designed and that hybrid teams decide their own balance between remote and in-person work.

What’s a non-negotiable in continuous improvement?

Heike: Never stop questioning. We combine structured process improvement with cultural evolution, challenging assumptions every few years and embedding learning into the day-to-day rather than treating it as a one-off project.

What’s the most common mistake corporates make in venture building?

Patrick: They try to overcontrol. Ventures need space to move fast, to learn and to pivot. The best corporates provide strategic direction and support, but resist the urge to micromanage.


What advice do you have for innovation leaders starting new businesses?

Patrick: Think in terms of validation, not perfection. Get real market feedback early and often. You’re not building for your board, you’re building for your future customers.

Stefano: They underestimate how hard it is to unlearn. Becoming future-ready isn’t just about getting new tools, it’s about letting go of old habits and ways of thinking. That requires leadership and commitment.

What advice would you give to executives navigating complex change?

Stefano: Start small, but stay systematic. Complexity can’t be reduced, it has to be managed. Build structures that support experimentation, learning, and adjustments while maintaining strategic focus.
