Your opportunity

JOB DESCRIPTION

The role is that of a domain expert: you contribute your scientific knowledge of the field to strategic engagements with a long-term, future-oriented perspective.

Domain Expertise and Evidence Assessment

  • Share a well-founded view on the acute effects of non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation (e.g. auricular or cervical) on mood and alertness, including time to onset and realistic effect sizes.
  • Explain whether and how specific fibres can be targeted more selectively, and what benefit this would bring.
  • Assess the drivers of inter-individual variability and habituation over prolonged use, and how they can be mitigated.
  • Assess potential undesired hormonal or peripheral effects from long-term use.

Expert Dialogue and Future Perspectives

  • Take part in structured expert interviews and, where useful, in workshops with senior stakeholders.

  • Bring an informed view on emerging research, protocols and devices in the field, and assess their plausibility and relevance for everyday, non-clinical use.

Review and Sparring

  • Review interim findings and assumptions for scientific and practical realism, and challenge them from a practitioner's perspective.
  • Explain complex neurophysiological dynamics clearly to a non-specialist, executive audience.
Portfolio Management challenge
  • Experience: 6+ years of applied research or industry R&D experience with non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation in humans, from academia or industry.

  • Core expertise: Hands-on experience designing and running human studies, including stimulation protocols, outcome measures and safety assessment. Must have studied acute stimulation effects; studies with healthy participants strongly preferred.

  • Future orientation: Forward-looking, strategic mindset with a strong interest in how scientific insight translates into new products and experiences. Able to think beyond today's state of the art.

  • Communication: Able to explain your field clearly and concisely to non-specialists and senior decision makers.

  • Language: Good command of English required.

Desirable:

  • Experience with physiological markers such as heart rate variability or pupillometry

  • Experience with repeated or long-term stimulation protocols
  • Experience contributing to device development or consumer applications
  • Experience in facilitating or contributing to workshops
Neuroscience
  • Engagement type: Freelance / independent consultant

  • Time commitment: Flexible, depending on your availability and the needs of the engagement. This ranges from selective expert input on demand (a few days in total) to a more active role in the project team (up to 40 to 60% FTE during intensive phases). Exact allocation agreed individually.

  • Location: Remote-first. Occasional travel to client locations may be required

  • Language: English required.

  • Confidentiality: Standard NDA required. Candidates should confirm they have no conflicting engagements in the relevant field prior to engagement.

  • Rate: Competitive day rate commensurate with seniority. To be agreed.
