Your opportunity

JOB DESCRIPTION

The role is that of a domain expert: you contribute your scientific knowledge of the field to strategic engagements with a long-term, future-oriented perspective.

Domain Expertise and Evidence Assessment

  • Share a well-founded view on the mechanisms of autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR), ideally from a neuroscience perspective.
  • Explain the prevalence of non-responders in the general population, and whether apparent non-response reflects true immunity or exposure to personally irrelevant stimuli.
  • Assess whether ASMR-inducing sounds must be recognisable or personally meaningful, and whether combining auditory and C-tactile stimuli could increase the intensity or consistency of the response.

Expert Dialogue and Future Perspectives

  • Take part in structured expert interviews and, where useful, in workshops with senior stakeholders.

  • Bring an informed view on emerging research and on how well ASMR generalises to real-world settings with less privacy, such as public transport versus home, and assess the plausibility and attractiveness of new applications.

Review and Sparring

  • Review interim findings and assumptions for scientific soundness, and challenge them from a researcher's perspective.
  • Explain complex perceptual and affective dynamics clearly to a non-specialist, executive audience.
Portfolio Management challenge
  • Experience: PhD in neuroscience, psychology or a related field, with 6+ years of research experience and published work on ASMR in healthy or clinical human samples.
  • Core expertise: Solid understanding of ASMR triggers, individual differences in responsiveness and the methods used to measure them, including physiological or neuroimaging approaches.
  • Future orientation: Forward-looking, strategic mindset with a strong interest in how scientific insight translates into new products and experiences. Able to think beyond today's state of the art.
  • Communication: Able to explain your field clearly and concisely to non-specialists and senior decision makers.
  • Language: Good command of English required.

Desirable

  • Research on related phenomena such as frisson, aesthetic chills or misophonia
  • Experience with combined auditory and tactile stimulation paradigms
  • Experience collaborating with industry, media or consumer audio teams
  • Experience in facilitating or contributing to workshops
Neuroscience
  • Engagement type: Freelance / independent consultant
  • Time commitment: Flexible, depending on your availability and the needs of the engagement. This ranges from selective expert input on demand (a few days in total) to a more active role in the project team (up to 40 to 60% FTE during intensive phases). Exact allocation agreed individually.
  • Location: Remote-first. Occasional travel to client locations may be required.
  • Language: English required.
  • Confidentiality: Standard NDA required. Candidates should confirm they have no conflicting engagements in the relevant field prior to engagement.
  • Rate: Competitive day rate commensurate with seniority. To be agreed.
