Exploring the Challenge and Opportunities of Innovation

Written by Dr. Tobias Heger | Nov 20, 2024, 1:34:56 PM

Innovation is the lifeblood of business success, yet many organizations struggle to balance day-to-day execution with forward-looking exploration. This challenge was at the heart of Marenco’s recent event, Innovator’s Solution, co-hosted by Bluemorrow. Leaders across industries came together to discuss how to navigate the complexities of driving innovation in today’s rapidly changing world.

With over 25 participants from leading companies such as Rheinmetall, Hamilton Medical, Geberit, and more, the event provided a unique platform for sharing insights, experiences, and strategies. Keynotes by Prof. Dr. Stefano Brusoni (ETH Zurich) and Dr. Tobias Heger (Bluemorrow) set the stage with compelling perspectives on balancing exploitation (refining current operations) and exploration (embracing new opportunities).

Their thought-provoking presentations sparked lively discussions on how organizations can better define, manage, and embed innovation into their DNA.

Common challenges in driving innovation

One of the highlights of the event was the interactive workshop, where participants worked in small groups to identify the hurdles they face in fostering innovation and brainstorm actionable solutions.

Common challenges included:

  • Unclear definitions of innovation within the organization
  • Pressure of short-term goals limiting long-term investment
  • Cultural barriers, such as fear of failure
Many companies face the same struggles: without clear processes for innovation, progress often slows down. Organizations that succeed focus on building strong innovation skills, encouraging risk-taking, resilience, and better teamwork across different departments.

Strategies to unlock innovation potential

On the flip side, participants also shared strategies for overcoming these challenges, including:

  • Fostering a strong innovation culture based in empowerment and psychological safety
  • Centralizing data and knowledge management for better decision-making
  • Creating clearer innovation processes to drive meaningful change.

Additionally, adopting more effective methods for user testing and validation was recognized as crucial for bridging the gap between ideation and successful execution.

By better identifying innovation opportunities early on and testing them rigorously, organizations can move faster and de-risk innovation investments.
